A while ago I indulged myself and purchased a virtual reality headset. Not the kind where you slide in your phone but one that is linked to an actual computer to generate the images. I can tell you, it is AWESOME.
Don’t get me wrong. It is obvious the technology still has a long way to go. But oh boy, just getting a taste of what it is already able to do is simply incredible. Ever wanted to be batman? No problem. Ever wanted to face hordes of evil zombies and shoot at them without restraint? Done! I’ve found myself laughing maniacally several times over in these last few days as I blocked arrows with my shield and slashed at monsters with my sword or shot them with my bow from a distance (or from really close up as my aim leaves something to be desired at times).
Is it perfect? No, there are still some issues with it, like the fact that if you look close enough you can see the individual pixels. You also need a pretty powerful computer, though I must say that some pretty affordable graphics cards have hit the market recently. The field of view is also limited at the moment, but in all honesty that doesn’t really bother me, it’s what’s in front of you that matters anyway!
Should you buy a VR headset? I can’t say. I’m a bit of a gadget nerd and I’ve been waiting for this kind of thing a long time. It’s quite expensive, especially if you take into account the cost of a powerful computer. So for most of you out there the answer is probably no. But you should definitely experience it at least once! The next generation of VR will become better and probably cheaper over time as the technology improves. Virtual or not, it will become part of our reality. I am excited!
