My youngest and I love watching The Expanse together. We cuddle up in bed in the evenings or on the sofa on gloomy mornings and put it on.
I keep wondering what fascinates her about this particular series so much. This because there is really no other show or movie that keeps her interested for more than a few minutes at a time. Did she somehow inherit her father’s passion for sci-fi and the cosmos ? Does she appreciate the gravity of the conversations between the show’s characters? Or is it something simple and completely unrelated that I am somehow missing?
What does it for me is the fact that it touches on so many of my thoughts, hopes, fears and questions regarding the future of our planet and that of the human race. Will we continue to be petty, even if we expand our inhabited territory into space? Do dispute and discord have value for humanity or should we work on eradicating those behaviors so that we can thrive through unity? What will we be like in the future? How will life in space affect us on a genetic level? Will we ever grow to regret the way we approached life on Earth on a collective level? Will the expanse be forced or by choice? Will we become wiser, less wasteful, more focused on what really matters?
D and I disagree on most of the answers to these questions…
What do think? Do you ever wonder about the distant future?
I can’t wait for June to grow older so that I can discuss these matters with her. I bet she’ll have lovely insights! And maybe she’ll even be able to tell me what she loved so much about this show as a baby.
