A couple of days ago Nina and I had one of those evenings where we never seemed to run out of words. We talked for hours and during our conversation I hit upon an idea. To better understand where this idea came from I must probably first explain to you that I am very passionate about how social interaction works and how evolution drives us forward.
Have you ever considered the fact that every single thing that happens on earth is actually one big experiment? Life, the conductor of this experiment, has only two goals. It wants to survive and it wants to replicate. Every single living creature on earth has a purpose, and that purpose is to bring life to where there was none before. On a macro scale life could be one of the rarest things in the universe! Yet, it is ever expanding and growing. It started with a single cell and now look at this place!
Why do we want to leave this earth? Why do we look at the moon and wonder how we could get there? Why on earth are we thinking about colonies on Mars? Because something inside of us is telling us we should spread out, and have babies, and preferably live. In order to survive in a constantly changing environment there is a great need for flexibility and adaptation.
We live in an age of rapid change, and our biological evolution has trouble keeping up with us. It took hundreds of thousands of years to get where we are today. Yet society changes a lot faster. Technology is rapidly altering the way social interaction works and here too we see evolution at play. Some of you probably still remember that time when you had to go to the shop down the street because they owned a phone and where you could then call a doctor if you needed one. Think about it! Before the internet and smartphones, now so widespread, you had to go to a library and go through books to actually look up some information! How many times a day do you look up some arbitrary information that would’ve taken you a lot of effort to find in the past? It’s all one button away these days.
So we adapt. And where biological evolution can’t keep up technology might pick up the slack. It’s both an exciting and terrifying thought. We are Borg, we are one. This, to me, is one possible path humankind may take. It is social media driven to an extreme form! I will continue my thoughts on the ‘cyborgisation’ of humankind’ in my next post!
