Why an audiobook?
I listen to an audiobook every single day. An audiobook, to me, is just one of those elements that makes my day complete. Nothing relaxes me more than a warm soothing voice reading a story and bringing me to another world. But why should you try one? Here are the 10 best reasons I could come up with! Fair Heads-up: This post contains affiliate links.
1. An audiobook is easy to get
Some of you may like strolling through a library or going through old dusty book stores, but not this guy. Maybe it’s just me but I like the thought of having everything at my fingertips. Try getting an audible membership. Audible has an amazing selection of audiobooks online. Digitally downloadable to your smartphone, tablet or pc in no time. Their collection is growing by the day and there are some amazing sales on all the time. They even have a try one for free thing when you take a monthly subscription! You want a specific title? They’ve probably got it.
2. An audiobook in your pocket
Let’s face it. Some of you hate putting down your books. True readers don’t sleep until 4 in the morning. Right after that chapter, and maybe the next one. We love stories. But we can’t always carry the book with us. Audiobooks are always available on your phone! You can listen whenever you want!
3. Length of the audiobook
When I pick up a book I look at how big it is. How many pages it has, how long I am going to be able to read it at my tempo. Audiobooks just tell you. You know you’ll have an x amount of time to look forward to. Some of you may not agree, but I love that about an audiobook! Did you know that the Audible – Audiobooks & Podcasts for Android app has a sleep timer? Want to go to sleep after your current chapter? No problem.
4. An audiobook anywhere, anytime!
This is an extention of the ‘in your pocket’. Think about it. You are in your car, in traffic, spending time just sitting there listening to nonsense on the radio for what sometimes seems half the day. You can now fill that times listening to something interesting or fun. Spend your time with a book in your ears instead of listening to traffic news.
5. Give your eyes a rest
Reading is fun, but also tiring on the eyes. Especially as we grow older our eyesight can start deteriorating, why not give our eyes a rest and let our ears work for us a while. Don’t put the book too loud though, you don’t want to go deaf as well!
6. Characters come to life
A good narrator can really make a book shine. A lot of work goes into creating the right voice and manner of speech a character has. When done correctly it’s a joy to listen to a whole range of different people brought by one person. Even if you’ve read the boko before, hearing the narrator’s interpretation can really help you appreciate the story even more.
Audible audiobooks have this great feature called ‘whispersync. Basically it allows you to switch between the kindle version and audio version of your book without having to look at where you last where with either of them.
Tip: If you are a kindle reader you can usually get the audio version at a reduced price. There are some great deals out there and I might just make a list of those in a next article.
8. Sharing the experience
While you can imagine that reading the same book together can be an awekward thing to do, listening to a book can be done with ease. You don’t have to wait for the other person to finish the page, or tell them to wait up for you. You can enjoy a good story with your partner, your kids or anyone else who likes stories. Good old fashion story telling is a thing of the past, but it has its charm. Share your favorite book with your partner while you’re cuddling in the couch. Turn of that tv and turn on a book instead.
9. Your kids can’t destroy an audiobook
I love a good book as much as the next person. Well, maybe slightly more. I also can’t stand it when my kids decide to grab my book from me while I’m in the couch. I also don’t appreciate my books being filled with crayon drawings. A book in audioform can’t be creased, ripped or used as a toy.
10. Saving space
While the thought of having your own library is cool it’s not really in the cards for some of us. You may have a small house, or simply lack the energy to go and organize all your books neatly into some kind of order that makes sense. Books tend to pile up in corners and stay there for some people. Audible stores all your books for you and allows you to access them anywhere, anytime, provided you have an internet connection to donload them ofcourse. No more piles of books that take up valuable space!
It all comes down to preference in the end. Some people just like to see things while others prefer to hear them. I love being able to finish 3-4 books a month and still get all my chores done around the house. (Well… most of them.) Some people like to turn on the tv for company but I find the moving pictures to be distracting. A warm voice with a good story can occupy the mind while the body goes about doing daily tasks that don’t need much attention. Have you tried an audiobook before?
