A while ago I followed a discussion on bodily hair in a Facebook mommy group. The conversation started with someone sharing an article about embracing pubic hair.
I was shocked and deeply saddened by that fact that most reactions were uninformed, close-minded and downright hurtful. So many women – including midwives 😳! – responded with disgust and prejudice. For a moment, I felt like I was back in high school, attending our first sex-ed class. The nervous laughter, bewilderment, discomfort… When all we were actually doing was talking about basic human existence facts! Watching this Facebook conversation unfold gave me a similar feeling.
Years have gone by since the memory of my first sex-ed class. Because of more and more women speaking up and educational body positivity articles, I erroneously though we were past all of the nonesense. I obviously forgot to take into account that progress happens gradually and at quite different speed for different people.
We grow up in a society that doesn’t attach much importance to preserving, respecting and sustaining the human body. It focuses instead on correcting, adjusting and changing it. Many of us were taught that our normal traits, thoughts, parts and behavior are ugly, dirty, faulty and sinful when in reality we are beautiful, perfect and amazing machines!
Please know that your body is wonderful just the way it is! Cherish it! Nurture it! Appreciate, accept and celebrate it! Value everything that comes with it : urine, feces, saliva, hair! Because only when times get rough do most come to realize how precious all parts and functions of our bodies are. Only then the true priorities become clear! And they do not include a ‘clean’ shaved vulva or the waxing of legs or chest! So please, protect your body! Nourish it! Love and enjoy it for as long as you get to. Because life is finite and our bodies don’t last forever.
