Before I became an aspiring writer I was already a fervent reader. Throughout the years, I’ve spent many a night staying up too late and living a different life through the eyes of some made up character. Once in a while a book jumps out of the crowd and gets me excited. ‘The Never Hero’, written by T. Ellery Hodges, is one of those books.
Before I continue, let me explain that, as I have stated in a previous article, my reading habits have changed over the years. Nowadays, most of my books are consumed in audio form. So when I recommend a book, I automatically recommend listening to it as well!
‘The Never Hero’ is, as you may have guessed, a story about a hero. Jonathan Tibbs, a young man in his last year of college, is a normal, hardworking guy. He’s no geek, but he’s got brains and determination. The only thing he lacks is a purpose. All of this changes when he is one day selected by a man who may very well hold the fate of mankind in his hands. Jonathan is granted enhanced strength and durability but is forced to fight monsters from another plane of existence without knowing why. Why is he the never hero? Because every time he wins the battle, time gets reset and only he remembers what happened. Nobody will ever know he is fighting a secret war to save mankind. There is more, but I’ll leave it up to you to discover.
The voice acting on the audiobook was done by Steven Barnett. He does an excellent job of bringing the book to life. The characters are recognizable and sound varied. The editing to make it all sound cohesive was done superbly. Ever wanted to try an audiobook? Be sure to give this one a try and let me know what you think!
