With July arriving at our doorstep a new period of the year has announced itself to me. Two months of work and no respite await. It’s time for me to share my recipe for survival during these mentally and physically exhausting months. Note that I am not a health-nut, far from it in fact. I’m a skinny, tall human being with the uncanny ability to shovel any kind of junk food inside and still remain untouched in the weight department. But even I must admit that kind of lifestyle does take its toll. So let me share with you my rules to survive a busy summer season.
1. A lemon a day keeps the doctor away
The many health benefits a lemon has to offer are undeniable. So first thing in the morning grab a couple of lemons and make yourself a healthy drink to start your day with.
I can not stress this enough! Meditation is one of those things that prove that the best things in life come for free! The health benefits of meditation are numerous and it takes up ten minutes of your morning. Try it.
3. A morning jog
This is a tricky one. it requires a bit more effort than squeezing a couple of lemons or meditating but it is one of those things where you get better at as you go. Start off slow and go a little further every day until you’ve reached a point where you are comfortable going for a run. Don’t overdo it, but try to make it past the end of the street at least to start with. Before you know it you’ll get the hang of it.
4. A well balanced diet
This may come as no surprise to many of you. The body is a resilient machine designed to take a lot of punishment. But if you feed it the wrong kind of fuel it will start breaking down in the long run. Instead of a juicy hamburger try a well made salad. I’m the first to admit that this may well be the hardest thing on the list. Cut sugar from your diet and add some healthy options instead. (Sidenote: from personal experience I’ve noticed that the initial cutback of sugar may have some side effects. I’ve had to deal with a slight headache, mood swings and, surprisingly, an unstoppable hunger in the first two weeks. Don’t give up!)
Sleep is the cornerstone to staying on top of this healthy lifestyle. The benefits of a healthy sleep pattern are manyfold. One of them is strengthening your willpower to continue going down the healthy path. It is far easier to pick the harder but healthier option when you’re not battling fatigue on top of temptation!
